Nutritional therapy support for constipation

Constipation is far more widespread than most people realise, with some going as infrequently as once a week. For the bowel to function at its healthiest, clearing it once or ideally twice a day is the general benchmark β€” and when that doesn’t happen, toxins that should be eliminated from the body can simply hang around and end up being reabsorbed.

We offer personalised nutritional therapy for people dealing with constipation, taking the time to properly understand individual diet, habits and history.

Understanding constipation

What causes constipation?

Dehydration is the single most common cause. A number of other everyday factors are frequently involved too:

  • Drinking less than 1.5–2 litres of water a day
  • A low-fibre diet
  • Dysbiosis (an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut)
  • Mineral deficiencies
  • A diet high in processed or refined foods, and wheat
  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Not allowing enough time for a bowel movement, or ignoring the urge
  • Stress
  • An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
While constipation itself is rarely dangerous, a persistent, unexplained change in bowel habit is always worth having checked, since on rare occasions it can be an early sign of something that needs medical attention.

Good nutrition and some straightforward lifestyle changes can have a genuinely powerful effect on constipation, often getting things moving again fairly quickly.

Nutritional therapy is a complementary approach that supports general health and wellbeing. It does not replace individual medical assessment. Anyone currently taking prescribed medication should continue taking it as directed, and any changes should always be made through whoever prescribed it. Individual results vary and no specific outcome can be guaranteed.

Constipation & nutritional therapy

Common questions

Nutritional therapy works by identifying the individual factors behind constipation β€” hydration, fibre intake, gut bacterial balance, stress, or underlying issues like thyroid function β€” and building a realistic, personalised plan around them, using ordinary, accessible food.
Not as a blanket approach. Rather than strict rules, the plan looks at what genuinely suits the individual, using accessible food that fits real life.
