Nutritional therapy support for fertility

The number of people experiencing fertility challenges is on the increase — sperm counts have dropped significantly in recent decades, sperm abnormalities are becoming more common, and around 30% of couples are told they have “unexplained infertility.”

There is a great deal that nutrition, supplements and lifestyle changes can do to support fertility, and it’s an area we work with often.

How nutrition can support fertility

Certain nutrients play a genuinely significant role in fertility, for both partners:

  • Certain fats can help balance hormone levels
  • Some foods can improve the quality of a woman’s eggs
  • Zinc can increase sperm count and reduce the risk of miscarriage
  • Antioxidants can help protect against birth defects and miscarriage
  • Some vitamins increase sperm quality and help prevent sperm clumping or sticking together
  • Other nutrients can increase blood flow to the uterus, helping provide a more fertile environment for an embryo to grow and develop
Lifestyle factors matter just as much as diet — smoking, alcohol, being overweight, recreational drugs and stress can all affect the chances of conceiving. Since it takes roughly 3–4 months for both egg and sperm to develop and mature, we generally recommend following a nutrition programme for around that length of time before trying to conceive, to give the best possible chance of success. Simple, non-invasive testing can also help identify any nutrient imbalances or deficiencies along the way.

What our clients say

★★★★★
After trying for a baby for over 12 months, undergoing many medical tests and taking medication that was making me feel terrible, I was looking for a place to turn to for help. My first session was very informative, interesting and engaging. Emma concentrated on everything that was relevant to me and the depth of her knowledge was amazing. I followed her instructions and started feeling better within 2 weeks, and started getting my energy back. I felt wonderful. My eating plan could fit practically into my day to day life. I was pregnant in less than 4 months after my initial appointment, and everything went very well thanks to Emma’s pregnancy eating plan and the supplements she recommended. Words cannot express how thankful I am to her and how astonished I am at what good nutrition can do.

★★★★★
A good friend of mine recommended I see Emma after years of infertility followed by several unsuccessful pregnancies. I had heard that many women will seek nutritional therapy when having problems conceiving and carrying; however, I always thought of myself as a very healthy person. After yet another miscarriage, I decided it was time to make an appointment. Upon seeing Emma for the first time, I learned that I was again pregnant. It ended up being perfect timing — Emma worked with me, taking into consideration the blood tests I’d had done by the hospital, to pull together a gluten and dairy free diet that would allow the right nutrients to get through the placenta to the foetus. She also put me on vitamins and supplements that would complement the diet. As a result the pregnancy was very smooth, I generally felt great and found I had a lot of energy, and I have now given birth to a beautiful baby girl who has been well worth the years of trying. I would honestly recommend Emma to anyone who is thinking of seeing a nutritionist for whatever reason — her personable, professional and approachable demeanour make her very easy to work with. It’s obvious that she is in the business because she really cares and wants to help people — her support has been invaluable.

Common questions

Nutritional therapy works by looking at nutrient status, hormone balance, weight and lifestyle factors that can influence fertility for both partners, and building a personalised plan around them, using ordinary, accessible food.
Since it takes roughly 3–4 months for both egg and sperm to mature, starting a nutrition programme around that far in advance gives the best chance of the changes having a genuine effect by the time you’re ready to try.
Yes, where relevant — fertility involves both partners, and nutrition and lifestyle changes can make a meaningful difference on both sides.
